Rear Admiral James F. McNulty, United States Maritime Service (Ret.), 77, died Tuesday, Nov 14, 2006 at his home in Punta Gorda, Fla.
Admiral McNulty was born in Lawrence, Mass in 1929, the second son of the late John F. and Gertrude B. McNulty. He attended Central Catholic High School and later graduated from Punchard High School in Andover, after serving three years as a page in the Massachusetts State Senate.
He graduated from Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering, later earning advanced degrees from Tufts University, George Washington University and the University of Rhode Island.
He served a full career in the US Navy, serving at sea in command of destroyers. His shore assignments included serving as special assistant (speechwriter) to Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt Jr., Chief of Naval Operations
Admiral McNulty's final naval assignment was as Chief of Staff and Senior Aide to the President of the US Naval War College, Newport, R.I. His numerous awards included the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat 'V' (two gold stars for third award), Meritorious Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, and various Korean and Vietnamese Government awards. He retired as a Captain in 1977.
After his naval service, he completed a full second career in maritime education and training. He served as Academic Dean of Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, Maine; Head of the Department of Marine Transportation at Texas Maritime Academy, Galveston, Tex.; and as Superintendent at Great Lakes Maritime Academy, Traverse City, Mich.
Admiral McNulty and his wife of 53 years, the former Mary Young of Andover, retired to Florida in 1993. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children and their families; Mary McNulty McKay of Virginia, Neil Patrick McNulty of Virginia, and Jane McNulty Cook of Texas.
He was predeceased by a son, James, earlier this year. He and his wife also have 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is also survived by two brothers, John T. (Jack) McNulty of Texas, and Thomas A. McNulty of New Hampshire.
A Mass in Admiral McNulty's memory was celebrated Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Punta Gorda, Fla. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, under full military honors, on April 24, 2007 at 11:00 am.
